The State Historical Society could receive funding for a new facility.

From KBIA, Maureen McCollum reports that the State Historical Society could be getting money to move into a new facility. University of Missouri System officials have made it a priority to budget more than $46 million to the Historical Society for fiscal year 2012. The funding would still need approval from the state legislature. The State Historical Society is currently located in a wing of Ellis Library. UM Vice President for Finance and Administration Nikki Krawitz says the Historical Society wants a new building to take better care of its collection.

“The facilities are inadequate for their needs, and the ability of the public to have access to the documents and the materials the State Historical Society has is limited because of the parking and access issues.”

The Historical Society has experienced a number of state budget cuts in recent years. It’s had to downsize staff and cutback on hours of operation. Krawitz says the system’s funding would only go towards a new building, and not towards other Historical Society needs. It would be up to the Historical Society to find a new facility or location.
